i have recieved a strange mail.is it possible to trace the IP address of the computer used to send the mail?

It is very unlikely that you can get the IP of the person who sent the message since the information that would get you back to the computer can be spoofed/faked.
If the information wasn't spoofed or faked, then you can probably get back to the mail server that it was sent from and if it required a username and password before it would allow the user to send, then maybe it could be traced back to a user, but it is a bit of a longshot. If it is spam, then you can try spamcop at:http://www.spamcop.net/

The IP is the IP of the mail server used to send the mail, not the computer/sender itself.

i.e. if I sent you an email the IP in the headers would be of my ISPs mail servers

if you know the ip go

Start - run - (type) cmd then in the comand menu type tracert (space) the ip eg 111.111.111.111 and press enter and it will trace every where the ip goes threw to get to its host.

In command prompt type
tracert ???.???.???.??? (<

yes you can trace go to http://visualiptrace.visualware.com/ and enter the ip address.

If you hit "reply", would the e-mail address of the sender show up in your outgoing mailbox?

I run a program called Trace, it will do that and more.
