Normally a Rewritable CD has a space of 700 MB in it , But, writing a data of 1.5 GB , twice its capacity is quite impossible still I hope the Cd would be containing zipped files/application files/compressed files and those reulted in taking 1.5 GB space on your hard drive when opened.
Other option is that it would be a DVD and u have mistaken that it is a normal CD.
Another thing use data less than he capacity of a disk to make it work better and faster.
THANKS

Are you sure that it wasn't really a DVD?
They look so similar it is difficult to distinguish the difference.
Since a DVD holds up to 4.7Gb single layer, this would easily hold the 1.5 Gb.
If you are entirely sure it was a CD, then the only way I can see that happening is if the CD is full of small files and your File system is using large allocation units which causes the files to take up more space than they need.

Open the ISO file with winrar And extract in a folder.then Select all files in this folder and right click and click to add to archive and compressed it, then you can easily write it in a 700 mb cd.

CD uses CDFS (Compact Disk File System) Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CDFS

While your hard drive depeding on your operating system it uses FAT 16/32 and NTFS files system.

As file systems are different in different media's you get different space issues. There is no secret behind the CD. This is the fact.

This happens when you buy a protected CD. Usually they place a dummy file with a size of 1GB on the CD to prevent duplicating of it. but there is some ways to do it!!!
