You gotta think - fast.

The basic elements of fire are fuel+heat+oxygen(air)

remove one element and the fire will go out.
BUT
Do not use water (which reduces heat and "smothers" the fire - keeps the oxygen away from the fuel) on any incident that involves liquid fuel - you'll just spread the fuel around a bit and make it bigger. Probably the same with wax, which will be liquid if it's burning.

Liquid fires: a CO2 extinquisher (elimitate the oxygen with carbon dioxide) or a flameproof/dampened towel/blanket/sheet.

Simple rules (fire isn't clever, just scary when you gotta deal with it)

I don't need to tell you to avoid using water on an electrical fire do I? That's suicide.

Like the other guy said, a dry chemical extinguisher will work on most things, but if you're not sure, just get clear and let the fire department deal with it.

an ABC dry chemical extinguisher will work for most flammable materials, but more information will be needed to give specifics to different situations.
