Fact 1: If you do not maintain your car, you will either pay someone else to maintain it, or you will be walking...been there.
Fact 2: When you take your car for maintenance, if you know nothing about what's going on, you could get shafted. Find a trusted mechanic...they are worth their weight in gold.
Fact 3: You can learn to do these things yourself! If you have the spare cash, and the time to invest, go to Autozone, Pepboys, Advance, NAPA, or whoever and buy a general repair manual for your vehicle. You may be able to find one at your library. Haynes is a good one to start with, and read it, especially the first part about routine maintenance. You will learn valuable things, maybe even some stuff you can fix yourself. And you'll know what's going on when you take it in for repairs.
The "average Joe (or Jane)" can learn about vehicle maintenance if you set your mind to it. You can do it!

Average Joe and Jane.. As a minimum look in your owerns manual. It will tell you what you SHOULD know about your car and important things to check. Then there are internet sites and selfhelp books like Haynes or Chiltons that will guide you through everything from minor repairs to rebuilding the engine.
My advice is leave the complicated stuff to trained automotive technicians. But tire pressures, fluid levels, what that little red light means etc.. every driver should either know or be able to find in the owners manual.
Minor maintenance like oil changes, tune-ups, tire rotation, etc.. can be learned by almost anybody and can save you lots of money.
Search around your local area for self-help garages and or classes.

also know that when your rad is low, don't run the car accross town then pop the hood when you get home to top it off. anti freeze doesn't feel good when its blowing from the radiator. Co-workers wife done that, and hes a mechanic at that.

1. weekly checks on your car.
-battery fluid, lub oil level, water level (in radiator)
2.monthly service of your car, get oil change, lub-oil filter change, fill up the battery fluid, brake fluid. etc......
these are the least that you should actually know, other like tires inflation , etc.... i assumed that you know.
hope it helps.
