Laptops and desktops these days both have enough power as standard to do most multimedia tasks, so the only thing you really need worry about are the pros's and cons between lap and desk...

Laptops are obviously portable, and that's not just good for journeys, but also means you can have them in any situation - in bed, on the sofa, in the car, in the garden, in the park etc. Also, they are very space-saving as everything is housed in one little box. One good thing which sold me is, that you can add peripheral devices to them, so that they work just like a desktop anyway! So when you're at home, just plug in an LCD monitor, a keyboard and a mouse, and close the box, and it's just the same as having a desktop - so it's like having both!

However, lap tops are generally more expensive than desktops spec-for-spec - and even more so if you're gonna buy a load of peripherals. They are much harder to upgrade, repair or modify the components, and most would require a repair shop to do the work. On a desktop you can do most things yourself. And they are slightly more prone to breaking down than desktops - they run at a much higher temperature for one, and due to their portability take more knocks and are more likely to be put in compromising situations where they can be trodden on, dropped or spilt on. And because the main user interface - the keyboard - isn't isolated form the workings - there is a big risk of permanent damage here.

As for recommendations, I'm afraid Dell are the best value at the moment, but I wouldn't buy another Dell - very disappointed with them in general - crap customer service, over-priced consumables, and they try to sell you stuff which is crap eg. BT broadband and McAfee Virus.

But I can't give you any alternative 'cause I haven't bee in the market for a while. Buy on-line though, it's usually cheaper. Shop off-line, decide what you want, then buy on-line.

Hope that helps!

i recently took an HP laptop. The reason is I just wanted to take it with me when I go, if not all the places at least to some. If you don't want to move it or only once in a while then you can stick to desktop. You can get all the features you have in laptop, except for the mobility factor. I would suggest you to go for desk top. If you are not satisfied with this answer, I would say take the best configuration you can find for Laptop, ask for the same configuration in a desktop, including multimedia, video and all. I personally feel that the colours in desktop appear better than in laptop. So for the video part I would say desktop is better.

Coming to the brands, don't go by advices. Do a market survey of who is giving at what cost and the most important is, are you getting after sales support in your area or better be it on site support, which means that they will visit your place to fix any problems. who so ever you feel will give better after sales, you can go for that brand.

If you go with a laptop, there would be less wires. But be aware, if you have certain problems with the laptop, it will be more expensive to fix then a desktop.

i love both, I have used a and had a private computer longer than a pc, and pc are good, yet may be worry each from time to time, yet they are extra transportable and a lot less heavy and may be sturdy.... also pc you may lay down with them on your lap and be comfortable..
