I will preface this answer by saying that this will never happen.
However...
Carmelo Anthony should be made an example of. Banish him from the league forever.
I hate to say that because I love basketball. I also think Carmelo is as talented a basketball player as someone can be. But, enough is enough. When a star player in the league can allow himself to drop to that level, something needs to be done. A message must be sent. A strong message. Not to Carmelo, but to the league. Say goodbye to Carmelo and say hello to a league that should understand what side of their bread is buttered.
I am disgusted by what I saw. I would feel the same way no matter who did what Carmelo did.
If a star player were to incur such a penalty, what kind of message would be sent? I don't mean to the league, jerky. I mean to the youth that look up to NBA players. I think the message would be clear: Your thug mentality doesn't fly here. Goodbye. Don't let the door hit you in the butt.
And before anyone gets on me about "not understanding", I have competed in athletics my whole life (I'm 38 and have played, among many other things, plenty of hockey) and have never even thought about doing what Carmelo Anthony did during any altercation with the opposing team.
He wants to be a star, he's got to act like a star. Sucker punching is not a "star-like" quality (or a good quality for a human being, period).
I say send the message and send him packing. For the betterment of all sports.

As long as fans, owners and the media keep telling these violent street thugs that they are better than human beings, they are going to continue to act like gangsta street thugs.
I think there should be a minimum I.Q. requirement to play professional sports, let's say one point higher than Mentally Retarded.
That will, of course, eliminate 90% of the NBA, but maybe we'd have a little more intellegence on the courts.

One quick question. How many of you people called jason varitek a thug for punching arod and starting a huge brawl a couple of season ago. how about when barrett the cubs catcher sucker punched the white sox catcher last season. was he a thug, when they were fighting were they thugs, i find it amazing, when there are white players who fight its just a fight, but when it a nba black player, their thugs, someone explain that to me.

i agree with what everyone say too but NCAA basketball is not all that great either. I mean look at all the rivalry games the nasty things people say on and off the court.
