The valuation of precious stones is a complex and difficult process that requires skill and long experience. "Jade" is even more complex than most as not only are there two minerals "jadeite and nephrite" which come under the descriptive name jade but a long list of minerals that are excellent look alikes as well. Without proper testing equipment it is very hard to differentiate these minerals. It is also common practice to stain the jade minerals to give them a better and more desirable colour - which, of course, greatly affects the value. I think your best move, other than taking a gemmology course and spending ten or twenty years working in the profession, is to take the stone to a reputable jeweller and ask for an insurance valuation. This will cost a small sum but is worth it. Please remember however that an insurance valuation is NOT what the stone will sell for but how much it would cost to buy an identical item in a normal retail shop. True value is usually about half this figure.

Most jades sold in America is of low quality or worse a fake. The value varies greatly, like most precious stones. If you have to find out, I would suggest you go to a reputable jeweler who handles alot of Jade. Most will be in Chinatown. They might suggest someone if they can't do it themselves. It will cost you. Becareful, with which jeweler you work with. I Went to CHinatown in LA, because my friend wanted to by a Jade statue, and he learned a lesson. Half the stores were not to be trusted. There might be a certificate for gemstone, like in diamonds, for evaluating stones.
