Most consumer electronic devices have an internal processor that controls the device. The software for that processor is called firmware. In many cases, the manufacturer provides firmware upgrades to fix bugs or add features. In that case, new firmware could be downloadble from the manafacturer's web site.

All the answers so far are correct. You know software is what you load onto a machine to make it do things. Example, games are software that you load onto a PC. It is called "soft" because it is loaded and can be changed (load a different game). Firmware is a type of software that is loaded in non-volatile memory (example, FLASH memory on your computer or other electronic device) that tells the processor what to do on startup. It does not get erased on power down (hence it is called non-volatile). The BIOS is firmware for a PC. The motherboard comes with this programmed already. Often, it can be upgraded (Flashed, updated, etc.) and this is done by going to the manufacturer's site and downloading the new image and FOLLOWING INSTRUCTIONS EXACTLY. Since this code tells the processor what to do on startup, if you do not update it properly, you could prevent your machine from starting properly.

Well, digital hardware requires software to operate. Like a Digital Camera needs a software to function. This software is installed in the chips and they help in functioning of the hardware just a Software installed in a Computers supports the Hardware in it. So these software in the devices are called a Firmware. They are responsible for all the functioning of the device including start up and shutdown.
If u need latest firmwares for your devices you can look for them in the manufacturers site and flash them to your devices. But be care full if u install wrong firmware it can make your device unusable.

Firmware is imbedded software of the Electronic gadget. Be it PC, Play Station 2 or 3, iPod, Digital Camera or Mobile Phone. Its runs the system and the gadget. It can be found by visiting the property of the device.
