No. People often just go to sleep and fail to wake up. Some even have smiles on their faces. Imagine.

The answer is yes.
Because we live in a society that fears death.
Also because any death leaves behind others that grieve.
The death itself may be painless, passing away in one's sleep of natural causes.
And even if family members have prepared themselves for a loved one's passing...when the moment comes, it is indeed painful.

Things that we do not understand are the most painful. Like death.
Some cultures as part of their grieving process have celebrations to honor and remember the life of the deceased. They feel the pain of loss of course, but look to the life of the person instead of the death to comfort them.
Western culture looks at this and doesn't understand that type of grieving process.
Each human being grieves in their way, and each human being experiences pain of death, be it a loved one or a pet or a way of life that must be left behind.
Is death always painful? To some degree it is.
But the more we understand and accept the death process, the easier we can cope with it.
For the record, we are not speaking of suicide of course. That is one of the most heart wrenching and life altering situations any one will ever have to deal with, if they are one of those left behind.
The pain of a suicide is excruciating to loved ones. And causes them to disbelieve and doubt their own lives. There is guilt emotion on top of the sadness..that never really goes away.
Perhaps it is best to say...death does not have to be painful?

Well, there are plenty of people that it can be assumed they did not feel any physical pain at there death, either by being unconscious, numb, or gassed, and there are some other possibilities. But mentally, I don't know what happens after death so that part of it might be painful. Yet before it, I think the cases lacking physical pain may have quite possibly evaded any mental pain as well.

Death is only painful if you think that it is the end and fear it because you don't know about it. It is natural to fear the unknown

Let us define death in a very casual way: - the mind does not register the in coming and outgoing information of the senses, the knowledge of your breath stops being registered in the brain.

Now don't you feel that this happens to you every day! when you go to sleep, what happens when you wakeup every thing starts all over again. I should say we all are the greatest experts at it don't you agree.???

I'd like to hear the answer to that myself. But then again, it'll be difficult to judge the answers. Obviously, nobody who would be able to answer has ever died of he/she wouldn't be able to answer in the first place.

So does it really give brave people the allowance to say, "no, it's not painful." or the cowards to say, "yes, it is painful."?

Personally though, I think pain is different from person to person. A strong mascular man may be able to withold a gunshot but he may not be able to see his dog die, etc.

To me, death IS painful. Especially if there are still things I want to do in this lifetime that I haven't gotten around to yet. Because regrets are painful. And physical pain is painful. So, yes, it is.

Death cannot be painful before that can be...

I am not dead of course I cannot know but if death is not functioning of my body so pain will be something impossible to feel. Before death, yes, it can be very painful(or not) but death's itself and being dead do not seem something painful to me.

I think sometimes live is more painful than dead. How do we feel pain if we already died by the way? I think, there is limit of pain that human can bear, if the pain is over the limit (especially make you die) you can not feel it.
One thing for sure, we all will die eventually, so make sure you live right so that you can die with no regrets and your fear of death its just because afraid of making sad your beloved not afraid of dead itself.

Prior experience cannot tell me anything, I have not died. I have almost died, thrice. Each time was not something I wished to bear, so my assumption is that dying is not pleasant, but unknowningly probably painful until you cease to breathe. I have heard and read that if you chopp off a man's head, he is still living, without breathing for a couple minutes thereafter. I cannot imagine it does not hurt to be in that state. Can you imagine seeing your headless body as someone picks up your head? Try not to die as long as you can bear, but when you do die, I imagine dying in your sleep offers the least pain. When you are old.

death is never painful...the body has an unknown mechanism that shuts off pain at the point of death.
