I was having a formal dinner last night with 5 other friends. Everything was going rather smoothly. When the check came, everyone chipped in their share of the dinner. I wanted to pay for my share, but all I had was a debit card, and if I were to pay with my debit card, I would have to pay for everyone. That might exceed my limit in my debit card, so I asked one of my friends if he could pay for me first, and I would run over to the ATM to get the money later to pay him back. One of the girls on the table went like "That is a shame. You can't even pay your own bill." In my mind, it is not that I can't, it's just that I want to save the hassle. Then my friend willingly paid for me, but after that he added "Now you owe me 8 + 18 bux you originally owe me." I was just embarrassed in front of everyone. That 18 bux was money I promised to pay him for borrowing his book. After all that, I went to the ATM to get CASH, and the ****ing machine ATE my card. I could hardly believe it myself.

Next do the right thing and get your money before you go out. I knew a guy he used to do that all the time. If you don't want to be embarrassed than don't put yourself in that position. You set yourself up for that guy to say what he did. This ones on you, take responsibility fo setting yourself up. If you do, it won't happen again. If you try to put this on them and do the poor me thing than it will happen again. The next time you go to dinner with the guy that made it a point to tell everyone that you owed him from before, when the check comes over grab and tell him you got him covered for looking out for you last time. That will change how he looks at you and make him think twice about showing someone up. Take control and feel good about it.

You went to a fomal dinner with 5 other people knowing you had to pay for your share of the meal and did not have cash or a different way to pay for you part.?
That does not sound very good.
There is a different between a debit card and an ATM card. A Debit card is like a credit card, an ATM card can ONLY be used at an ATM machine.
If what you had was a Debit card then any resturant could have put what you owe on your card and the other people could have paid how ever they were paying. With out you having to pay for everyone else.
Dont worry, embarrassing things happen to everyone.

The First Thing --- next time when you talk about those guys, don't use the word "friends".
They are not your friends.
The 2nd Thing --- Plz forget that incident,
Give your collegue his 18 bux, and close this chapter. Even i would say, give him 20 bux and tell him "Keep the change".
They don't deserve to be your frnds, they themselves are shamefull persons. Real frnd never behave like that.
LESSON : The moral of the story is that the next time you go out with your collegues for a dinner/lunch or whatever, check that you have enough cash with you. You should have enough money in your pocket, while going out with others, specially when girls are there, because they may ask you for paying their bill also.
Remember the lesson only, forget the incident.
You are cool, don't feel embarrased.
and yeah, don't forget to give him 20 bux :)
Have a nice day, good bye !!!

I don't know how old you are and maybe times have changed ( I'm 40), but that sounds exactly like what my freinds would have done to me as we always would pick on each other. The more embarassing the better. No animosity later.
It is a form of love, really, young men can't express that they care for each other so they dump on each other with a laugh. They don't dump on people they don't like becuase it would be taken seriously. Since you went out to dinner with them, I assume you are in the former camp. I would guess, if they are real freinds, they got a great deal of joy out of the ATM eating your card.

Money always brings out the best and worst in people.
He took adantage of an oppurtunity to one up you to make himself look better than you.
Money, however,(or lack of)does not make a person valuable or not..
Change YOUR attitude, then you won't care next time a situation lke that arises.
Also-don't worry,he'll need a favor one day..

sometimes embarrassing things happen to me too. But really, your friend just looked like an uptight fool and the girl was NOT LISTENING, or just got off to saying something bitchy. According to my opinion, they should be more embarrassed for treating you with the suspicion that you were trying to get away with a "free meal". After all, they are supposed to be your friends.

New spin on old problem-those without embarassed by those with. I had a friend with money when I was younger, he always told me that he knew he had more than me. So, he paid. I understand now. My friends without, I don't mind paying-its not about the cash, its about competition. If you aren't competing, it doesn't matter.
