From Microsoft's standpoint it means eXPerience.
People joking about Microsoft say it means:
eXtra Profit
eXtra Problems
Another computer term for XP:
Extreme Programming (or XP) is a set of values, principles and practices for rapidly developing high-quality software that provides the highest value for the customer in the fastest way possible. XP is extreme in the sense that it takes 12 well-known software development "best practices" to their logical extremes -- turning them all up to "10" (or "11" for Spinal Tap fans).

Windows XP is a Microsoft operating system for computers. It came after Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0 but uses components from both. There are three versions: Windows XP Home, Windows XP Professional and Windows XP Media Edition.
Windows Vista has just started to be used by businesses and will be available for home users in early 2007. It is the new version of Windows operating system that has replaced Windows XP but my recommendation is to stick with XP for some time yet until Vista has calmed down, had the first service pack (to get rid of bugs and fix problems) and is being more widely used.

The "XP" in Windows XP stands for "experience," symbolizing the innovative experiences that Windows can offer to personal computer users. With Windows XP, home users can work with and enjoy music, movies, messaging, and photos with their computer, while business users can work smarter and faster, thanks to new technical-support technology, a fresh user interface, and many other improvements that make it easier to use for a wide range of tasks.
