My elderly father was in a rehab facility recovering from pneumnia, gaining strength reaching his physical activity goal, and a week from coming home. He was suppose to be on 2L oxygen at all times to keep his saturation at a minimum of 92%. This particular day he was left with an empty tank for a few hours. His oxygen saturation had dropped to 86%. We got a new tank going andI thought everything would be fine. 12 hours later the facility called and said his oxygen level had dropped to 84% and he was being rushed to the ER. There I was told his organs were shutting down (I recall them mentioning liver, pancreas, and kidneys) and he was not going to make it. He died 24 hours later. Even though my father was not in the best of health, I believe he was neglected, and his death was pushed forward because the facility left him without oxygen for a few hours.

sadly enough if the organs do not get enough o2 to the them they will shut down. i would get an attorney inolved with this as it sounds like neglect on the facilities part i know it wont bring him back but you could make a differnce and save others who are at the hands of this neglectful act. my condolences on the loss of your father.

Hi, I'm a registered Nurse, the saturation drop your fathers body received may have very likely contributed toward his death, for the sake of other patients I think its important you demand an investigation into the incident to prevent this happening to someone else. Your father was however 94, multiple organ failure is a common thing to lead on from pneumonia, as the immune system is less able to fight back. Your father should have been monitored more, I would have thought his relapse was due to the lack of oxygen. Hope this helps. This is certainly neglect.

How was it determined that he was left without oxygen for a few hours? Whoever knew that he was out of oxygen, which would enable that person to determine that he was breathing without oxygen for an entire few hours, should be held responsible if they did not inform nursing that he was without oxygen. If this particular nursing home knew he was out of oxygen, didn't have any on hand, and didn't send him out to the ER right then, well then I'd say they were neglectful.

Oh no. If the O2 sat drops at any point below 90% that's always critical. The body goes into respiratory arrest and all the other organs follow. It's so sad that somebody forgot to get that new tank going.
