Yeah it's rude. I don't think a straight person would like it if we call them 'hetero.'
If it's done out of playful teasing where you're familiar with the person and you don't mind them using it, it's fine. But generally speaking, it's an offensive term.
We really just like to be called by our first names.

Let's put it this way... do you think a fat person would find it offensive if you called them "fatty"?
Some here say it is ok if it is true... I say that these people all need a wake up call. Just as the word "Neggro" or the meaner version of it, is used as an offensive slur as well as a way of affectionately addressing each other... the same can be said for "homo" and "fag"... but in my eyes, neither are right. These negative words only purpetrate the hatred the gay community endures... and should not be spoken by someone who is considered to be a decent, upstanding, person... period!

I agree with The Stalker. I joke with my friends all the time and we use all the nasty words in the book. It's a game for us. But I do Not tolerate someone else using the words.
The safest word to stick with is "gay." Homo has a negative connotation. Just make sure when you say "gay" it doesn't sound like you're spitting out a bad taste in your mouth!
With women it's a toss up... If a person doesn't know that I'm of the Rainbow People too I usually stick with the word lesbian. Because if they think I'm straight and I say "dyke" I could get my a** kicked. But many women who like women Hate the word lesbian so you could also get your a** kicked for that word, too. So you might just want to ask your friend what word they want you to use. :)
Also when refering to everyone it's easiest to go with the acronym. The one most people in the straight community knows is GLBT. Don't use the word "queer." People tend to have strong feelings about that word one way or the other.
It's confusing as all hell. But it's cool that you asked. :)
P.S. I guess I should also add that obviously all this advice is for when you even need to use any of these words. I know that you weren't planning on calling your friends "that gay guy" or "that lesbian." :)

As a gay man myself I would have to say that is a loaded question.
Saying it to a stranger that you hardly know would generally be considered be considered offensive.
If someone is to refer to me as a homo, they better be a best friend I have known for years, and saying it in a light vain.
Personally I prefer to be referred to as a gay man and yes would generally consider being called a homo fighting words, just like you don't dare call a black person the n word.
It is just calling someone out of their name tends to piss people off, no matter what minority they may be from.

possibly, depends on they type of person the gay, dike or bi person is. some dont mind being call f a g g o t, homo, co ck licker, pus sy lover, two-sider and other names, while others would get offended and either throw a ***** fit, or give you the cold shoulder. it all depends, some accept the truth and dont really give what you call them, while some accept and dislike being nicknamed for the things they do, and some are still in the closet. either way, i'd stick with their names, and lay off the nicknames utill you know if they'll accept it or not.

The only people that can call someone a f ag or queer etc are other gays!
Its like the blacks calling each other the "N" word but don't let them hear a white person say it!
Pretty much the same thing... Understand!

In the U.S., using a racial slur or cursing anyone is legally considered "communicating a threat." It's illegal, if that's not enough for someone, what is?

Would you really want to be addressed with the phrase that says you are having sex with someone's mother? Didn't think so.
