Illuminato
Illuminato, member of a group of people claiming to be particularly enlightened. Religious sects and secret societies have at various times called themselves illuminati (the plural form of illuminato), and there are persistent myths about such groups masterminding world events.

The Spanish Illuminati (aluminados) had beliefs derived from Gnosticism. During the 16th century they were suppressed by the Inquisition, a judicial institution that used coercion and torture to punish acts of heresy. Illuminati also established themselves in Picardy and elsewhere in France during the 17th century and lasted in isolated bodies until the end of the 18th century.

A secret masonic society with republican views was formed in 1776 by Adam Weishaupt, a professor of canon law in Germany. This group, called Illuminati because they claimed exclusive right to the illumination of Jesus, was anti-Jesuit and was suppressed in 1785.

Members of the Rosicrucian Order, AMORC (Ancient Mystical Order Rosae Crucis), a fraternal order based in California, have sometimes been called illuminati.

The Illuminati are supposed to be a secret society originated in Bavaria, Germany. According to certain conspiracy theories they secretly rule the world - especially finance and politics. The symbol of the Illuminati is the eye in the pyramid, seen on the 1$ bill. Some authors see them connected with the Freemasons and the Knights Templars, others don't. Do they exist? Nobody knows...
