Look up "literary agents." Ask until you find one that offers to read and evaluate your single best work. Mail it to him or her with enough return postage and you will probably get an honest (not necessarily kind) evaluation of your marketability. If they like you enough, they may actually suggest edits rather than reject you.
The reason I say an agent rather than a publisher more directly is that if you are any good, you will need an agent anyway. And if you are any good, one of the agents out there will be smart enough to realize it and take you on. At that point, you no longer have to deal with marketing your work; you just write. The agent gets a percentage of your income, so he is motivated to get you the best deal possible.
