Though you have a fan underneath the laptop, it could still be overheating. I would recommend placing your laptop into sleep mode when not in use to prevent this from occurring.

While your problem could be related to overheating, it can also be a worm or virus. The worm known as "Sasser" can shut your computer off at random times, and a simple way to check that is to download this file (From Symantec) to be sure:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/FxSasser.exe.
Also, check your System and Application event logs from the Administrative Tools in the Control Panel. See if anything is being reported right before the computer shuts off.
When the computer comes back up, does it report that it has "Recovered from a serious error?", If so, it is most likely crashing because of a device driver, memory issue or other system issue, in which case the event logs will be invaluable in finding the cause.

I've just got my first laptop, and I have noticed they run hot compared with desktops. If the laptop is not in use it should just hibernate. Go to control panel>power options, and check the settings there. If you and your son are not using the computers, then I would switch them off any way, for no other reason than to save energy, which in the long run could save you money on your power bills. If the laptop still cuts out get it looked at professionally, is it still under guarantee?

Buy a can of compressed air and blow out the air vent(s).
If it's an older laptop running Norton 2006 the CPU usage will be at 100% all the time and cause overheating in some cases.
Or it could be a defective internal fan or temperature sensor.

right click on your desktop and click 'properties', then click the 'Screen Saver' tab on the top.
then on the bottom under 'Monitor power' click on 'Power...'
there you will see the power schemes on what your computer will do when its plugged in or unplugged
an example of what might be going wrong with your laptop is that under 'plugged in' it might have 'system hibernate', 'system standby', 'turn off monitor', or 'turn off hard disks' selected and set to a certain time length.
try to change the settings on this so that it does not shut it down after a certain time period.
if this doesnt help sorry, thats the best idea i can think of, you might need to just take it to where you bought it or something :( but try what i said first, i hope thats whats wrong

Check at- click right on My computer>Manage>Device Manager. If in the listing shows something with yelow or red you have problems and you may need to reinstall the drivers. If not you still have hardware failure or hardware conflict. You can try to reinstall the Operating System and if this doesn't work to go to service.

yep.. probably a heat thing. Lap tops are very prone to them. If you need to keep the lap top on for prolonged periods, be aware it will probably quit on you. You can monitor it, sort of, by downloading a CPU temp monitor... so you can see it coming. I use SpeedFan.

Let me guess.. a dell perhaps?? I had a Dell and had this problem constantly, I have a mac now and never have this problem... You can try to raise the four corners with something to prevent it from overheating, but it is such a pain...
