Congratulations on learning to play the guitar. I have been playing for sixteen years, and it's the one thing I'm more glad I learned than anything else. It's a real blessing when there is nothing else to do to be able to pick up the guitar and just start strumming some chords, or when you get good enough, fingerpicking some tunes.
That being said, it completely depends on your level of ability, and your preference of music.
If you want to be able to play some cool rock songs quick to impress people, learn some good songs that have power chords. "She hates me" by puddle of mud is very easy. Green Day songs are very easy and fun to play. One of my favorite power chord songs is "Glycerine" by Bush. Very, very easy, and impresses people like crazy. If you don't know what a power chord is, find out, and start using them. They are easy and a lot of fun. It's just the sepeartion of two frets and two or three strings in a row you press down. You can easily move up and down the fret board and jam out!
If you are doing good with chords, you can pick out some good G, C, D songs to play if you are still pretty inexperience. "Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton can be played and sound pretty good simply by going "G, D, C, D, G"... Another fun song to get people singing along is "Margaritaville" by Jimmy Buffett...It's Just D, A, G, and toss in a little D7 (look it up it's easy) in between verses. Also, "My dingaling" by Chuck Berry is always a hit if you're playing in front of a crowd who is out going (like if you're all drinking) and it's simply G, C, D....
I doubt you're fingerpicking yet, but if you are you can look up "tab" songs on the internet (assuming you can't read music, which I can't). One of the first songs I learned to fingerpick was "Tears in Heaven" by Eric Clapton. Took a lot of practice, but I really wow people every time I play it.
After you learn the basics of fingerpicking you can take a song, for example, "Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton, and you know the chords (G D C D G right?) and you can FINGERPICK the CHORDS. Just hold down the chords and pick various strings (you'll get the feel for which ones sound right).
Good luck!

These days you can learn how to play guitar over the internet. Check out Mark McKenzie's guitar video lessons here: http://www.jamoramaguitar.com The videos are very easy to follow and to my surprise extremely helpful even for advanced guitar players. For beginners I would have to say this is a gold mine.
I was able to improve my skills in just under 4 weeks and I am an intermediate-to-advanced guitar player; I've been playing guitar for the past 6 years and I was on stage with my band a lot of times.
I live in New York City, I wanted to go to a pro guitar teacher but that would have cost me over $1400 per month. Good thing with this internet, $1400 it's a lot of money for me. Good luck!

Everybody who's ever picked up a guitar in the rock era has learned the opening arpeggios of "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin. I know that there are some good modern songs to learn, but StH is still the best place to start.

How long it takes to learn guitar depends on how good you want to get and how much practice you put in. How good you can get with 1-2 hours a day for a few months depends on what methods you use to practice. There are effective practice methods that will help you make the best use of your time. This course is one of the best. https://tinyurl.im/aH7It It's not just about how much you play but how effectively you play that will determine how good you will get.
