if you get a bag of builders sand and spread it over the decking this should help.you can get it in builders/decorators stores (i.e. homebase, wickes)
I do this on my patio, as I also have animals and it does help stop the ice.

Two things prevent ice, Heat and salt, use one or forget it. Dogs can handle the ice.

you can purchase 'rock salt' in bulk at the pet store, walmart etc and the dogs can lick it and the ice will melt, but if it rains, you will have to replace it.
rats and bugs don't like it

Throw some sand and/or plain kitty litter out - salt may harm it or the surrounding plants because it is corrosive as it melts - you wouldn't water your plants with salt water.
