Everyone is correct when theu say that there is no substitute for working problems yourself. If you want real mathematical maturity, you must be able to take exact definitions and derive your results from them. The greatest challenge in the transition from layperson to mathematician is to set aside your intuition and rely solely on definitions. Learn to do mathematics without using specific numbers.

The way towards this is to ask yourself "why" at every stage of the way. If you show that something is true, can you back up every detail of your proof?

The last thing: write proofs. Learning to prove results from your axioms is the way to be powerful.

Practice

practice works but also use your instinct....
sometimes your head intuits the path or answer as the brain sees the pattern or answer or way to solve faster than you try to work it out...
sometimes looking at and reading the problem slowly rather than just fritzing on how to "solve" works well...

practice the same probs or similars
then try to solve it ithin a time limit
in this way try to solve 1st easier probs then time by time the harder probs
