I grew up in Corona del Mar, which is a town in between Newport and Laguna and have a view of NB beach from my house! Newport is definitely way better for break because
-the beach is cleaner
-the water is cleaner
-there are better places to go near the beach (restaurants, bars, shops etc.)
-there are better looking people
-there is more variation in the types of waves (there are ones good for swimming, not just surfing)
-the wedge (it is the southern-most end of the beach where the waves are record size and there are always pro/semi-pro surfers there which is really great to watch)
Overall, Newport Beach is just better than Huntington. I think that most people who have been to both beaches would agree! The only downside of Newport is that it is difficult to find parking. However, since Newport is on a peninsula, you can park on the mainland and take the ferry out to the beach!
