It is human nature and what drives the progress. Standard economic theory assumes that the greater your income the greater will be your level of satisfaction or utility. If the nature of people was to be content we would still be living caves.

Because people see getting more will get what they want. For example, women want beauty and recognition and because of massive misleading advertisements and promotions, tend to believe that cosmetics will grant them beauty and recognition from men. These are illusions that people in general still fall for them.
You may say these are all about our ego-self's false identity that every satisfaction is external.

Why aren't people content with what they have?
Everyone wants more, more, more..I think to keep up with the Jones' for one. I don't know. I have everything I need, but I don't have everything I want. I feel blessed to have what I have.
