Why do people tap their cigarettes?

Why do people tap the end of their individual cigarette on something like a lighter just before they smoke it?

The idea is that by slamming the tobacco to one side, there's less air in between the bits of leaves creating a slower, smoother burn. Really its just to look cool doing it.

to pack the tobacco it should leave an indentation of about one centimeter from the the end of the paper to where the tobacco starts.
