The permanent storage is your internal Hard Disk Drive. On your PC it is a 3.5" hermetically sealed platter with IDE or newer ones are SATA. Unlike the RAM memory in the machine these disks do not need electricity to keep the storage. RAM "forgets"when the power is off.
In corporate environments some companies choose to use a more centralized approach for their storage and will use a Storage area network (SAN) or less expensive Network Attached Storage (NAS). With these devices no internal disk is need and the all their machines retrieve the stored information from the same Storage device.
There are some NAS devices now available for your home network that are not as complex and a lot less expensive. If you want a shared storage setup for all of the PCs in your house. you can find these devices at CompUSA, BestBuy etc.

hard drives are the primary storage devices, made by 2 to 3magnetics disks with a head that spins around to write 1 and 0 by changing the magnetic pole of each bit, or very small piece of magnet residing on the disk. 8 bits = 1 byte, 1024 bytes = 1KB, 1024KB = 1MB, 1024MB=1GB, 1024GB = 1 TB. When you buy hard drives they say 200GB, that is 10 based which means they are assuming 1000 factor instead of 1024 factor per unit. Windows will read the capacity of your hard drive differently since it is based on the 1024 factor, but whether 1000 factor or 1024, it wouldn't make a big difference (2% error). I hope that answers your question.

The difficult force on your computing gadget is a first storage gadget. this signifies that that's the default force to shop your courses and information. A secondary storage gadget will be some thing like an exterior difficult force, a flash force, or a 2d difficult force once you've 2 on your computing gadget.
