Viruses in a computer have a large scale of effects. Mostly things will get slow. Some programs may not work. You may get warning and unexpected shutdowns but that's just some viruses. You could have spy ware or ad aware or a combination or all 3. Its best to have a fully updated version of Norton or an other similar anti virus program.

There are free scans and programs that can work but Norton and mcafee are the only two I trust for a strong protection. Norton or mcaffe may not help when it comes to spy ware or ad aware but it can still help.

Also keeping the hard drive as clean as possible can help. Run disc defrag and you can also scan for bad sectors by running Error-checking. In windows XP these can be ran under properties tools for your C drive.

If none of this works or your PC will not let you install norton or MCaffe then post an other question here and say that you tried everything above. If you cannot defrag, it should tell you why if it does not tell you why post a question here. Both defraging and error-check can take time between 30 mins and 8 hours xp machine.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

One thing is when you have Internet Explorer as your home page and something else opens up instead of Internet Explorer. Your system restarts often, your PC crashes or locks up. Check your control panel, add and remove programs and see if there is one program that should not be there. The Internet uploads files without your approval and the list goes on!
