It was wrong to understand science and philosophy as different things.

Actually, they do not seem different to me. If somebody says " I am a scientist but not a philosopher.", I answer him like that "It is not possible!"

The question is What is Philosophy? It is a philosophical question probably have no certain answer but asking this question answers many thing.

Making new inventions is not science, science must develop our minds' way. If it develops so it is PHILOSOPHY:

When I was a philosophy major (class of 1974), the entire department except for myself considered it to be pre-law. I later went to law school, too.

Philosophy as a career path has actually increased since then. The only other thing we had open then was to go on to a doctorate and be a professor.

There were some discussions about consultants in hospitals around life and death issues and the like, but there were very few options in those days. Nowadays, as I understand it, almost every hospital has a consultant or even a staff member who is essentially a resident philosopher. No wonder, with the terrible life-and-death issues they face there every day. Too many people feel the chaplain just does not serve their needs, and the philosopher, with whatever title, is requested. Sometimes they also serve in a panel with others, including a chaplain or two.

There are undoubtedly other places a consultant in ethics or other philosophical disciplines can make a living these days, so I would say science and technology have increased the career options, not reduced them. At the very least, issues involving public policy such as stem cell research, conservation, taxonomy, genome mapping, genetic counseling, and on and on . . . anywhere an important decision is being made involving the lives of others, there should be someone who has the professional training to analyze the questions and present them in their ethical context.

When was philosophy a good/solid career path ? At least not for the majority of us.

I don't think philosophy is a lesser career path as it was 30, 50 or 500 years ago. It will always be needed, there will always be only a handfull of really good/worthy philosophers on earth, so yes, that I have to say, the competition is really high :-).
It is no worst than being a piano player in my opinion. You're either one of the 5-10 geniuses or you can always play in some local clubs/piano-bars.

It is not a career path for an average person that's what I want so say .... I guess.

Hello dear!
Superb question! We might need long nights and centuries to touch some answers for you!
Well, according to wise men of classical Greece, ALL IS ONE! Thus, when specialization came around, humanity is differing from wisdom and philosophy!
Another issue is the relation between philosophy and career! Philosophy might help in career, but it is not for it! Philosophy is to improve ourselves!

Yes, the governmental and corperations funding science's but not philosophy has tremendously limited the legitamacy of a philosophy career path. It has now been virtually limited to teaching and writing. anything else is a compramise to this so called path.

I think you are trying to kill philosophy by claiming it to be possible that philosophy can be reduced to a career.

Philosophy is.

in this day and age phiolsophy could never be a career sadly. it could be a pastime but that's about it. scientists should invent a time machine so that you can go back to ancient greece and be happy.
wait until the year 2012 when the world as we know it is supposed to end according to the myan calendar.
some people say that is when they are going to achieve time travel. you will no longer say where you leave, but when.
