ok I read the article, so a woman wants abook about curiosities so her friends think she is cool. AT least she likes and is into those things and wants to share them even. A true sign she likes them. So what if she doesn't have a PHD in it.

Thos eother folks buying literary treasures in languages they can't read to use as decoration is a CRIME

I agree that an unread book is a crime. Books should be bought for their content and not their cover. I am sorry, I did not understand the first part of your question, but I think I got the gist of it.

I don't see what's so wrong with it. I love books, don't get me wrong. I've got well over 500 on bookshelves and in boxes. But I also love aesthetics--a nice bookshelf is very beautiful and inviting. Makes a room looke more homey.

Now, even if the owners aren't particularly interested in the books, who's to say their visitors won't be? I know when I see a shelf of books, or a stack of books, I'm immediately attracted to them--I want to look through the titles and authors just because. If I'm interested, I either buy a book (at a store) or try to remember the title/author so I can look it up at home. So even if they don't serve much of a purpose to the owners, they may to someone else.

Beyond that, maybe you don't comprehend how many books are actually destroyed. When bookstores get too many copies of a book, and don't sell them all, excess are sometimes torn of their covers (so they have no resale value beyond the stolen/black market) and thrown out. Some people have jobs dedicated to destroying books. Book resellers will sometimes throw out books if they don't sell within a certain period of time (I know, it happens at the thrift store I help at).

So really, if you buy books by the foot just to decorate your house, you may end up saving that book from being thrown out, because otherwise it wouldn't be sold.

I'm really not sure what you are asking for in this question, but I do have a lot of books in my personal collection. ALL of those books are read (some many, many times) .. and I have cared for them too.

For the ones that were not that interesting to me ... or for people who get books (and really do not like to read) .. I think that a much BETTER Choice is to re-direct that "GIFT" to the Library (Public) of their choice ... so that OTHERS who enjoy that author can read the books and return them and spread the joy of the written word.

Some people collect books........but in my opinion, if you or someone you love will not read them and benefit from them somehow, you need to donate them to a library, because most likely someone else wants to read the book that is being used for 'decoration'.

I agree, buying books for their cover are demeaning to their authors and should be a crime. This brings me to question whether or not books should be recycled. I hate it when i see the library dumping a bunch of books in the dumpster because they are outdated.

I'm an English major... books are my world. I love them I have them everywhere... I have some I haven't read yet, but I'm working on it. I hate it when people give you that crazy look and ask "You read... for fun?" Gah! Stupid people... So did you have a real question?
