No clue what they dream, but they do dream. For instance, my dogs bark in their sleep and move like they're running. What else would they be doing that?

Well I am a vet in New Orleans and animals do dream. Cats and dogs dream the most because there minds are most active. If you ever see them move there feet or there paw than they are dreaming that they are running!

HI,
Yes, I believe they do. I have had several animals in my life and by my own personal experience is that they do. This is from watching them sleep. Just like my dog I have now, she moves her eye's like with human study of sleep disorders, they have R.E.M. ( rapid eye movement) which study shows that is when a person is in a state of dreaming. Also little face impression's. My dog makes at times her little smile's during sleep. Yes, I do believe animals have their own way of smiling. I'm not a vet. but would stand by my theory all the way. Now what animals might dream about, I have no clue....LOL...I hope this helps. .................BYE

Haven't you ever watched a sleeping dog have a dream? It is hilarious. Their little legs will move like they are running and they make these little squeaky barking sounds. I had a male Yorkie that would get so involved with his dream that he would wake himself up. Then we would all laugh at him and he would walk to his kennel with his head hanging down like he was embarrassed.

What do they dream about? Who knows. Maybe chasing squirrels, or romping in the yard, must be all good stuff because I have never witnessed a dog have a nightmare.

If you believe in the theory of evolution and accept man is a social animal and if you can agree with me when I say human-beings dream, then why not animals?
Animals dream too!
And they have sleep patterns similar to that of the human beings...after all, they are in no way different from us...right???... and are made made of flesh and blood and guided by the senses with a central nervous system like us. They also have a back up mechanism of a considerable portion of life's experiences in their memory system like how we do. However, if interpratation of their dreams is possible by animals within their species is a very complex issue. but I am sure pet lovers can trace valid proofs of animal dreams and find "interpretations" too! It is good that human beings can interpret their own dreams in wake though not accurately with all details intact, yet a considerable interpretation of most of their dreams are possible and proven which can facilitate study regarding the content of human dream... howver we cannot predict the content of human dream as we cannot measure the bounds of imagination... for man can dream far from real life experiences blessed with creativity and manipulation 'coz of the sense of discretion he has... or his intelligence...
What animals dream are but life experiences about them and not far from the ordinary. So a deer may dream of escaping a predator and go through all the emotional upheavals in the dream state and dream of eating his favourite grass pick...may dream of some death and disaster...but I dont think he can dream of supernatural elements, gods etc..like man.
Hey but dream is not something that is to the all gifted with vision of the world despite the senses...In that case, we can say that any dream is just a code and with its subjective interpretation and objective perspective only relations like similarity and unlikeliness can be drawn among species and between species with patterns traced....nevertheless any conclusion drawn...
If the deer has had a supernatural element in the dream
And if you call it real life experience...
you have just traced patterns
You cannot understand the codes of his dream....
this is true even if otherwise!
for we dream in the present and interpret the same in future and of a past which cannot exclude other pasts and other's past and present and future and limit it to our life experience is what make tracing the content of any dream abstract...but curiosity has no ends too......ask anyone...tell me your dreams...and trace likeliness and unlikeliness with ours but then have you been understood by an animal when you said_Tell me your dream????
Think ,that explains the tag after your question??? Cheers!!!

ha ha that's funny cuz i just put a question up telling people what my dog and cat dream about.

my dog dreams about running after the cat, and sometimes the mailman.
and my cat dreams about running after the dog.

its funny because i can tell my dog is running after the mailman because she growls and acts like she is out of breath from running after him.
i would have to say right now she seems worried so she must be thinking about how my brother didn't kiss her goodbye this morning when he left.

I think they do. Once my dog started to bark when it was sleeping. We have all well heard of sleep - talking, but my dog here was sleep - barking. Maybe he was having a nightmare that resulted in it responding in physical action. So ya, animals do dream.

since humans are animals and we dream I assume the same is true for other animals, other animals dreams probably include aspects of there daily lives and pets probably sometimes include some language (understood or not).
