If there were metal detectors placed in schools in Canada, do you think it would decrease the violence or would people just find other ways to hurt people within the school?

I don't think it will decrease violence, cause if someone really wanted to hurt someone, they'd find a way to do it. It creates a certain stigma in the school, though, like the issue of trust between students. Who in the school can they trust? they can't even trust the school's administration for their own safety.

Apparently, someone believes that placing them in court houses has deterred a whole lot of violence....

I think it would decrease the potential of many types of violence. It would not offer a 100% remedy.

It is, however, more difficult to commit mass violence without any weapons that contain metal; so that's one thing that would improve. Also, if some kids didn't have the over-confidence a weapon such as a knife can give them there's the chance they'd think a little longer before getting into physical fights. If kids did get into physical fights there would at least be a reduce risked of serious danger. Some violence wouldn't be quite as quick and easy as it can be now.

Could someone think up a different way to hurt someone else? Sure. There could, however, be a little more time for others to intevene in some cases. Also, again, hurting someone else wouldn't be as quick and easy. If someone had to work harder to hurt someone else they would lose some of any advantage they have over the other person; and it is likely, too, that they may not see the issue between them as worth bothering (in view of the added difficulty in fighting and winning).

That's a really good question!

I'm sure people who truly desired to hurt someone will still do it. They will find others to snick a gun in or use hard plastic blades.

But it does cut down on spontanious violence. If a teen always carried a gun with him, he is more likely to use it in a sudden burst of emotion. If you take away his secret freedom, he'll leave his weapon elsewere. He would have to put time aside to retrieve it. More time spent away from the situation, gives him more time to calm down and think.

No, it won't stop all violence. But it can help.

Violence is a way of life, especially when so many people are in such close quarters. It is sad to know that Canada is going down like the U.S. I wish we could do something.

Canada is going down the toilet like USA? what a shame lol. It could possibly help, if students are packing heat, it's good to try to stop them. Increased security will deter many crimes because of the increased factor of getting caught, or the simple innabilitity to get the apparatus through.
