The Winter Solstice has been celebrated for thousands of years in many areas before Christianity came about. Many of these traditions even celebrated the birth of a God as well, such as Heru (Horus). Yule also celebrates the time when the days become longer again, which is a good thing to celebrate when people live far away from the equator in the northern hemisphere.
Many of the Christmas traditions started out in these Pagan celebrations. Trees, wreaths, gifts, gatherings, etc, have their roots in many different traditions.

Yule has been celeberated thousands of years before coca cola invented santa claus, and even centuries before one stoned hippy was nailed on the wood.
Yule is the original festival of the winter solstice, that the christian priest couldn't suppress, so they turned it into a christian celebration and gave it religious content.
