The first thing we do is assign a variable to the standard of comparison. In this case, since Richard is described to be twice as old as Alvin, you would assign x to be Alvin, so Alvin would be the standard of comparison.

Let x = Alvin's age. Then, since Richard is twice as old as Alvin,
2x = Richard's age.

We know that the sum of their ages is 36; therefore,

x + 2x = 36

Now, this is simple algebra.
3x = 36
x = 12

Since x represents the age of Alvin, Alvin is 12 years old.
Richard is twice as old as Alvin, so Richard is 2(12) = 24 years old.

Richard is twice as old as Alvin.So Richard is 2x and Alvin is 1x.
1+2=3
Take the total sum of their age and divide it into 3 parts to find out Alvin's and Richard's age cause Richard's age is 2x Alvin's age.
36 divided by 3 =12(Alvin's age)
Alvin is 12 years old.
Richard's age is 2x Alvin's age so to find out Richard's age,you must times Alvin's age by 2.
12x2=24
Richard is 24 years old.
To check,just add the two person age together.
24+12=36

Hope you understand!!

Let Alvin's age is: x
Richard's age will be: 2x (because, Richard is twice as old as Alvin)

x + 2x = 36 (because, sum of their ages is 36)
=> 3x= 36
=> x=12

Therefore, Alvin's age=x=12
Richard's age=2x= 2x12=24

let the age of Alvin be x
Richard=2x
2x+x=36
3x=36
dividing by 3
x=12
therefore age of Alvin=12 and that of Richard=24
