Please do not take this the wrong way. I have played softball for over 26 years I have also coached Jr. Miss (similar to little league). I think it is great you want to go out for a team and it's awesome you picked softball, but in reality, maybe you should try a summer league first, get a little more acquainted with the game and see if you even like it, maybe even talk to the coach and see if you cuold be a manager, or assistant depending on what it is called at your school. Softball is not a sport that you can do a little reading about and be able to play. It takes practice lots of practice. you are asking now in December and most schools softball tryouts are at the end of Jan. to mid Feb. that does not give much time to learn how to throw, hit, slide and field. let alone learn the rules. As a player and former coach, I can tell you no matter how nice the girls are off the field when it comes to competing the claws come out. I have gone through many try-outs and it is tough. I am not trying to discourage you from playing softball or being involved with your school, I can also tell you if you are the manager or assistant the girls will be more receptive of you and you still get to go to all practices and be part of the team, they will more than likely even help you learn the sport. If you are bound and determined to try-out if nothing else start conditioning now, go to the gym get in shape start running and if your school has stairs start running them, most try-outs start off with a few days of running, and conditioning to weed out the slackers and girls that are out of shape. If yuo can keep up physically it will win you points. I am a catcher, and outfield, I would suggest maybe trying one of those positions. I wish you all the luck and I hope you end up loving softball as much as I do.

The nine positions on a softball team are:
The Battery...Pitcher and Catcher
The Infield...1st Base, 2nd Base, Shortstop, 3rd Base
The outfield...Left Field, Center Field, Right Field

The source I have listed is a very simplified version of the rules for high school softball.

There are three keys to playing sports, and these apply to all sports, but especially softball/baseball.

1. Be an ACTIVE team member. This means that you cheer your teammates when they are batting or fielding... and you encourage them when they make a mistake. Be the one who is always optimistic. (As a Freshman, don't try to be the leader, but be an eager follower.)

2. No matter what you're doing, HUSTLE. This means that in all phases of the game... run! Run on and off the field. If you get a walk, Run to first base.

Pete Rose was only a slightly better than average player, but he ran as I've described... and became an All Star. This is not a requirement of the rules... but it is a guaranteed method of attracting the attention of your coaches (and teammates) and will increase your chances of making the team.

3. Most important of all, HAVE FUN. The world is not going to stop spinning if you strike out. You're life won't end if you drop a ball. You are not trying to make a living from this sport... at least not yet.

No matter what, learn from your mistakes, try harder, and laugh with people who laugh at your lack of finesse. Be "Sally Sunshine" who enjoys every moment of every game and every practice... and fifty years later those memories will still be vivid and heartwarming.
