The ability or tendency of an organism or a cell to maintain internal equilibrium by adjusting its physiological processes.
2. The processes used to maintain such bodily equilibrium.

The above is a definition of psysiological homoeostasis. For example we sweat to maintain body temperature, become thirsty to avoid dehydration. In psychology it's more complicated. We try to maintain a psychological equilibrium; a psychological homoeostasis. Th phase the "balance of the mind is disturbed" is sometimes used to refer to a homoeostasis inbalance. The balance of the mind is mainly maintained by a belief system. For example someone who regularly flies all over the world believes air travel to be safe. One journalist did just that and covered war zones - and even in war zones he felt relatively safe. However, he was asked to cover a story and attend a scene of an air plane crash. A large passenger liner had come down with many dead, men, women and children. After that the equilibrium of his mind was disturbed and he became phobic about air travel. Many people would argue that is is safe to drive at 80 MPH on a quiet motorway at night and some drive even faster; one policeman drove at over 140 MPH and was deemed to be driving safely by a judge because of his training. But is that an illusion? We all see horrific accidents and people disabled for life in motorway accidents and beieve it will never happen to us. A good example of a feedback loop occurs in agrophobia. The person, goes out and for some reason panics, has an anxiety attack. They produce large amounts of stress hormones and this makes them feel ill. The original cause may have been thinking about where they were going - perhaps they panicked - because it was an interview they were nervous about. They now fear going out because they are afraid they may have another panic attack and so a single incident makes them agrophobic and afraid to leave their homes. Homoeostasis, both physiological and psychological is controlled at least in part by hormones. The hormones adrenaline and cortisol affect us when we are under stress and more research needs to be done in to the affect of the latter hormone. Homoeostasis is sometimes used to refer to machines and computers too.
