During the early seventeenth century, ties were not worn. Instead a collar was common, different types included the whisk, a collar wired to stick out horizontally; a collar with long points known today as a Van Dyke; an unstarched ruff like collar, and a retangular falling band[i/] across the shoulders.

Later in that century the cravat became popular, sometimes accompanied by a falling collar.

At the beginning of the eighteenth century the stock was worn, and a small turnover collar was also fashionable.
The cravat reappeared later in the century.
