Safety.
We want safety in a lot of things:
- acceptance from others makes us feel safe
- constant supply for our needs makes us feel safe
- consistency of belief systems with the people around us makes us feel safe
- opportunities to test our limits without fear makes us feel safe
- having someone special who would care about us makes us feel safe
- being at one/peace with nature can also make us feel safe
The need for safety also explains pathological needs eg.
- excessive needs for laws and punishments to make us feel safe
- excessive needs for objects/ materials/ idols/ golden statues/ buildings/ sound systems and the like to make us feel safe
- excessive needs for people to dress and speak and behave a certain way in public to make us feel safe
My conclusion is, EVERYONE needs to feel safe, and their behaviour, even pathological, contains evidence of this need.

We want not to want. We want satisfaction.
The Stones said, "I can't get no satisfaction." But this is almost like an illusion, because in many cases, we all want more of what we like, no matter how much of it we have. Pleasure, sex, happiness, money, comfort, and friends, are examples of this seemingly insatiable desire.
I think it would be better if we all strove for contentment, which is more of a mental goal than a material goal. Buddhism teaches this.

When life began as uni-cellular organisms, the instinct to assist our species was developed. This instinct, through the ages of evolution, developed and branched off into survival, passing on one's DNA and giving that DNA, in the form of offspring, the best chance to survive and continue to pass on the DNA. (This should ultimately be for the greater good of humanity.) These instincts ultimately branch off into various other desires, such as power, wealth, attractive partner, ect.

People want what ever it takes to be happy,
some seek it in money, others in power.
Most seek it in romantic relationships.
What we really want is good life long friends.

To be like their fellow animals: without thought, without emotion, without awareness. Simply to exist, blindly.
