According to the story.. He is St. Nicholas... a bishop that is very generous..... then they immortalize the idea by creating an image of an old fat man with beard and mustache.... i think thats the story.....

to be exact its a guy named St. nicholas that went to a orphanage with a bag of toys on christmas and gave them to the children and they get the elves from all the little children i suppose and he i believe he was fat and had a big beard and red clothes and he was in a carriage so the hoses must have been thought of as deer so they got reindeer and that is the story i think
