First of all, "urban" literature isn't defined as being about about African- Americans. It's about inner-city life (and that environment happens to be largely populated by ethnic groups like African-Americans, Latinos, Asians, etc in many major cities- it's more a matter of rich vs poor than race) The affluent people typically moved to the suburbs over the past few decades -and since more caucasians fell into that category, the 'burbs became a predominantly white environment. Obviously that has changed since the 60's...
