Well it depends - after all humans ARE animals so it happens all the time. But that's not really what you meant. - Humans closest relatives are chimps and gorillas (humans have been called the third species of chimpanzee) so if it could happen and produce viable offspring (able to survive till birth) then those species would be the best bet. Certainly there is less genetic difference between chimps and humans than between some destinct species that can produce (reproductively sterile) offspring. I don't think anyone's been able to get ethics clearence to do the test though (or has even tried.)

It is possible for some to fuse- but not successfully reproduce. For example, a human can impregnate a goat, but the goat would give birth (or miscarry) a nasty blob of genetic confusion that would not actually be alive. A pretty sick fact.

It is possible in theory, and in real life. During the holocaust, NAZI scientists were doing all kinds of messed up experiments like the question you asked, with horrendous results. The question you may want to ask is not if it's possible, but weather it's ethical.
