My lights in my three tanks are on from about 10am (or whenever I get up in the morning) to about 10pm. Generally, no more than 12 hours is recommended, as yes, lighting does tend to increase algae growth (it's one of many factors to grow algae).
Your fish need to sleep, too, and since they don't have eyelids to block out light, you need to make the room somewhat darker at night for them to rest. So leaving the light on all night long really isn't a good idea.

You should try to keep the lights on/off cycle the same as is it outside, this will make the tank seem a little more natural to the fish. If algae becomes a problem lengthen the time the light is turned off.

Yes light makes algae grow.
Cut them on in the morning and off at night. The same as your sleeping schedule!

When we had fish, we had the lights on a timer. They came on at around 8 00 am and they shut off at 11 00 pm.

Turn the lights on when you wake up, and leave them on until you go to sleep again. My betta likes it more when the lights are on anyways.

10 - 12 hours is physically powerful, incredibly in case you have stay vegetation too. i take advantage of a timer so the lights comes on without me having to bear in suggestions. i offered one from a ironmongery save for $5, works brilliantly.

When I had fish, I only put the light on when I was in the room. Helped with alge buildup. xP
