I just bought a 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee today and I noticed tonight that there is a red flashing light in the dashboard on the drivers side. It went off when I unlocked the door and then went back on after I locked it. When I turned the car on and locked the doors, it went off. But as soon as I shut the car off and then locked the doors again, it went back on. The dealership I bought it at said it had standard security system (which I assume is just regular door locks since I didn't receive a remote or anything). Are they wrong? Is this a security system and if it is, how do I get a remote for it and in the mean time if the alarm goes off how on earth would I shut it off???

Thanks for all the answers so far. To the poster who said look at the manual--I don't have a manual, the car was bought used. To the person who mentioned the "bump" on the key--the key is a flat piece of metal. And to the person who said I wouldn't be able to start the car from the passenger side if the drivers side door was locked--haven't had any problems so far!!! No annoying honking noise as of yet. I guess I'll hit the Jeep dealer and talk with them to see what they say. Thanks!

It's a part of your anti-theft security system. It blinks to deter thief's from trying to steal your car. You can't start the vehicle unless you unlock it with the keypad or with the key through the driver's door. You'll notice that if you unlock the door with the keypad or unlock the driver's door with the key that the car will start. If, however, you unlock the passenger door with the key, reach over, and start the vehicle that it will start and then die and the horn will annoyingly honk. (to stop it just hit the unlock button on the keypad untill the horn quits sounding...actually if you don't have any remote at all then I guess you would have to walk around and unlock the driver's door) This will just verify for you that the anti-theft is working and show you what a thief will go through if they try to steal your car without the key.

Sounds like an aftermarket alarm system. We had one on our Grand Caravan. There was a disarming switch hidden under the dashboard. The red light indicates the system is on. It was nothing more than a red LED about 1/8" in diameter with no symbol by it.

It is just the security system.Check on the key if there little bump on it.If there is a bump it is the microchip that controls the immobleizer. The immobleizer either controls the ignition or fuel system and shuts them down if the car detects a hotwire.

It's your anti theft system. Look at your owner's manual or google it on the internet. Some are there but not enabled cuz the original owner didn't buy the option.

The tiny red flashing LED, means your anti-theft system is working.
