Ephedra is a nervous system stimulant derived from the ma huang herb, and is also present in yerba mate, an herbal hot beverage predominant in South America. Guarana is an herb from Africa that contains caffeine, and is listed separately on herbal and beverage ingredient lists because it is a "natural" ingredient, as opposed to chemically pure caffeine produced by pharmaceuticals. Ephedra and caffeine have different stimulant qualities. Ephedra use in high doses can cause heart failure, as can caffeine, but the qty required for such an effect with ephedra is much lower than caffeine. Also, caffeine purity is regulated by the FDA while ephedra (ma huang) is considered a "supplement", and until recently was not regulated. People with weak hearts, nervous systems and any other medical conditions shouldn't use ephedra.
