I'm going to assume you mean a birth doula, but even if you mean a postpartum doula, most of the information here could apply to that as well.

A lot of states don't require certification to be a doula, but the training can be invaluable. You will learn numerous coping techniques and comfort positions, and even learn how to market yourself as a doula.

To become a certified doula you need to be trained through a recognized organization such as;
DONA- (Doulas of North America) http://www.dona.org/develop/birth_cert.php
ALACE- (Association of Labor Assistance and Childbirth Educators) http://www.alace.org/catrain.html#reg
ICEA- (International Childbirth Education Association) http://www.icea.org/ct_doula.html
CAPPA- (Childbirth and Postpartum Professional Association) http://www.cappa.net/labordo.asp
BFW- (Birthing From Within_ http://www.birthingfromwithin.com/doula.html

After training the organization that you are seeking your certification through will require certain books to be read, and for you to attend a certain amount of births and have doctors, nurses or midwives and families evaluate your services.

Here's a comparason chart of the differences of their certification requirements- http://www.mother-care.ca/CDchart.html

I am trained through DONA, and was very pleased with the thorough education I received. They are the largest and most well known organization, and because of that they are the easiest one to find a training at. The other organizations appear to have limited trainings.

Here's a great website that will provide you with a lot of answers. You can attain your certification to be a doula at home. But you must attend a birthing class and be a part of 2 births, I believe. Best wishes with your goal. I had a doula present at the birth of my son (in fact, I was one of her births to get her certification) and it really helped me to have that support. I was able to birth my son naturally... with no interventions.
