There are various products available to provide a secure closure on a door.. many are specific to the type of door.
You did not mention if you want to make this a permanent lock...
The easiest method, is of course, to change out the knobset, and install one with a lock. You can pick up these standard knob sets at practically any department, or hardware, store.
Here is a link to an alternative of the 'chair under the knob', heheh... tho, it does work on the same principle...

If for some reason you want to provide a lock, but you do NOT want to use a knob set (little fingers, for example), then you can add a flip latch higher up on the door, that will lock the door. And it keeps it high enough up, that it is out of reach of little ones.
If you provide some more detail, we may be able to give you a more specific answer...
What kind of door (entry, or interior) ?
Which side do you need access to the lock from? (Inside - pull the door CLOSED, outside - pull the door OPEN)
Is this a wood door, steel, other? And, is it solid, or hollow core?
Have Fun

For less than $200.oo you can purchase all the tools and equippment necessary to install a lock. Get a good look at the lock and the strike plate. Purchase screwdrivers that fit the screws. Purchase a wood drill bit slightly smaller than the screws to lead them. Purchase a hole saw that matches the back of the lock. Purchase an auger that matches the size of the lock's deadbolt. Purchase a power drill with which to use the drill bit, auger, and hole saw. One of those things that goes on the drill to keep it level might also help, and you'll need a router, or a chisel to cut a hole for the strike plate and the plate on the throw. The chisel is by far the cheaper choice, and you'll be hiding most any ugly mistakes behind a sheet of metal anyway.
First, use the hole saw to drill the hole for the lock cylinder. Then auger out the channel for the throw. Next slide the throw into the channel, and mark the face of it on the side of the door. Use the chisel to hammer in the edges, and then gouge out what you need gone. Once that fits good, you screw the lock part on, and with the door open, "lock" the lock so the deadbolt sticks out of the throw. Mark that on the door frame, use the auger to cut it, and make sure it's far enough in by locking the door. Now chisel out a spot for the strike plate, and put that in. Mark all the screw holes that go in the wood, drill them out, screw the screws in, and you can lock the door all you want.

I would replace the knob-set with one that looks like the original one but has a locking mechanism. HomeDepot/Lowes.
Alternatively, if it is only to secure you and the contents of your room when you are in the room. then, propping the back of a chair against the door will work.
Another alternative, again some security while you're in the room, would be a sliding bolt. This is screwed onto the door. A hole must be drilled in the door jam to accept the bolt when it is slid to lock.
These last 2 options should be considered semi-secure.
Best option -- replace knob-set with knob-set that has a lock.
Even more security would be gained with installing a deadbolt - but this would take additional drilling OR replacing knob-set with deadbolt, making an obvious statement on the door.

Well I guess it depends on what breed first of all. But, I'm pretty sure they will not put your dog to sleep because of him "nipping" and not drawing blood. I also don't think they will listen to a man who's in prison that's saying he was injured before he got locked up. Bottom line the lady is crazy.

First make it a priority to buy a lock. Second, prop a chair under the door knob. Then on the legs of the chair put something wedging it so it's harder to move.

prop a chair under the handle is about the only way without adding a lock to it. that only works if the door opens into the room.

Try putting a knife under the door frame and over the door. May want to try a few butter knives. It will give you a heads up if someone is trying to get in.

get a triangle wedge that's used to hold doors open. then jam it under door to hold it closed.. but if you plan on leaving that room and want it secured? tie a rope to the knob then tie other end of rope to a different door.. that's closed.
