LaTeX is probably the best. It does take some getting used to. Below is a website where you can download a free Windows copy. I would suggest getting a manual.

I just wrote a thesis for a PhD in statistics. That was the program I used to write it. If I didn't have it, I would have gone absolutely nuts, especially if I had to use something like word.

where do u want to write ... if it is word then there is matematical equation editor ... if u want to solve using software then go for matlab and mathamatica

if in linux use Latex

There's a program called MathType that is used by lots of the GTAs at my school.

try and get your hands on matlab or mathamatica. these two softwares are reall awsome.
