Does anybody konw what stores like to price their products ending at $0.99? Why is everything $9.99, $99.99, or something other amount with $0.99 in it?

Any other rational explanation besides it being a sales gimmick?

Other than a sales gimmick, it's now tradition. It is hard to switch to pricing things at $10.00 when everyone else does it at $9.99.

It sort of does work when I drive buy gas stations. You quickly pull in to a station if it is 1/10th cheaper. And when you are paying per gallon of gas, you think it is bigger savings.

I think you're right. It's all a sales gimmick. It's all psychological. Sure, anyone buying something for $9.99 knows it's pretty much $10.00, but I guess for a fraction of a second, your brain thinks "Heh, I'm getting this for less then $10.00", and that's all it takes for the subliminal message to sink in that your getting something cheaper then $10.00. It just helps a bit to close the deal so you buy the item.
