i recently got an xbox 360 (pro console), and i have been standing it up vertically on the floor. the problem is that it is on carpet. is that problematic? i heard that it blocks the air flow on the side facing the carpet.

It may partially obstruct air flow. It would be best to stand the console on a smooth, flat surface at least a foot or so above the floor.

Definetely place it on a hard surface. You don't want it blowing up or something :)
Also, It's better to put it horizontally

if you really want to you can, but you should never have a system on the carpet period
