Ok so I have some Sony DVD+R. I want to copy a movie onto one of them so I can watch it in my home DVD player. What file extension would I need?
.avi, .mpg, .mpeg2, other?

While the DVDs are recorded in MPEG format, the files in a DVD have a *.VOB extension. These VOD files include not only audio and video content but also important DVD navigation.
