What is the the meaning of Non 18/8 Stainless Steel and where it is used ?

I find many manufacturers say their products are made with Non 18/8 SS but do not give further details.

18/8 Stainless Steel utensils usually won't have any problems with dish-washing machines; no pre-washing or drying after-wards needed. Other types of metal may cost less but I wouldn't put them in the dish-washer unless mentioned by the manufacturer.
