WLAN stands for Wireless Local Area Connection, that means you are not going through a physical ethernet or usb cables to establish the connection to the Internet....
With a "wireless adapter" or "wireless lan card", your laptop or desktop can actually communicate with your wireless modem or router.......
So it makes our life easier and we can surf happily......

Yuppers... instead of using physical cabling to connect your PCs to a switch/ router/ etc. you have wireless NICs on your PCs and a wireless access point that send the info back and forth through radio frequencies.
