This is a loaded question. SO...
I will give you the BEST quick fix (that i know of).
1) go to 'start' on your pc
2) choose: RUN
3) type 'msconfig'
4) then choose the 'startup' tab
5) go through the list and find applications that you don't need to start up every time you use the computer and uncheck the box
these programs run in the background and take away from your computers speed. they are often programmed to startup every time by default (which is dumb).
Note: all these programs will still work but will take a couple of extra seconds to start up (since they weren't already launched at startup)
examples: microsoft office (unless you use it every single time then uncheck the box)
Important: the list of applications is not clearly labeled and it is often hard to know what a program is [look under the 'command' column for hints] if you can't figure out which program it is talking about then you might want to think twice before un-checking it. Although, on the other hand, most programs dont need to startup right away. EXCEPT anti-virus/spyware etc. software - leave those!

- Remove wallpaper and set screensaver to none. They run in the background and use memory.
- Do not keep large files. Save often. Work is in memory until saved on disk. If necessary, break up large files into chapters/several files.
-Run only necessary programs in startup. For those programs you use periodically, you can wait a minute to load.
-Every two weeks, at least, run a disk cleanup, scandisk, and a defrag.
These should help a lot.

I have used Norton Internet security and Norton System works. Kind of pricey, but after 6 years of using symantec products, i haven't been let down yet. most of the bigger establishments use norton stuff ( U.S. Air force uses it ha ha) it's really simple to use. it's kept my machine working great. also download ad-aware from www.lavasoft.com. that's free, and it's a really good program... good luck!
