This is not a stupid question. That's what this site is here for. :) I'm sure there will be plenty of great answers from the very knowlegdeable women here.
Well, to start off, don't make the same mistake I did. Tell your mom right when it happens. I think I probably went 4 or 5 months without telling mine, and she was really hurt. I think she could have helped me out a lot to begin with.
Be prepared to decide whether you would like to use pads or tampons, or both. If you decide to use tampons, realize they do NOT take your virginity away for you, they're just more discreet. If you wear tight pants, use tampons. If you're more relaxed at home, use a pad. It's better for your body if you alternate between the two. Make sure you have both of them to use whenever you would like. Keep a couple in your purse, bookbag, or wherever you feel comfortable.
When/if you get your tampons, read the pamphlet inside. It will tell you how to insert them and also tell you about TSS. Most women do not get Toxic Shock Syndrome, but as I said before, if you alternate between tampons and pads, it will decrease the chance you will get it to about nothing.
Get Regular absorbancy tampons to begin with... if you feel like you're changing it too much, (you wipe and there's blood before at least 3 hours, or you get a weird feeling down there... (believe me, you'll know what I mean,) go a grade higher. If you can go the recommended 6-8 hours without changing it, then either go lower or stay the same... your choice. Do some experimenting.
Change your tampon everytime you go to the bathroom.
Get some baby wipes. When you're having your period, there's nothing better than that. It will make you very feel clean. (Why did we ever stop using them, anyway? If they're good enough for babies, why aren't they good enough for us?) Some pads are coming with them now. Those would be a good idea.
Overnight, you can use either tampons or pads. As long as you know you're not going to sleep more than 8 hours, you can wear a tampon. Otherwise, you can wear a tampon AND a very thin pad... just in case.
Get plenty of Advil or Ibuprophen, (not asprin.) Take it every morning you're having your period and whenever you feel like you're getting crampy. If you take it BEFORE you get cramps, it will make you feel so much better. Honestly, you can ask any woman, the best feeling is going through your period without having cramps at all. It's wonderful.
Don't drink too much caffeine. It will make you really crampy. If you are following the Ibuprophen regimen, you should have no problems with it. Otherwise, try to avoid it and drink plenty of water.
Lastly, some women tend to break out a lot a week before they get their period. It's normal. Chocolate tends to bring the zits out in us, no matter how old we are.
Good luck, hon. I hope it goes smoothly for you! :)

Hi, don't be scared. Your period, in simple terms, is a natural way for your body to cleanse it self. I remember when I got my first period. It was scary, I will give you that, but I knew that it was gonna be a part of becoming a women. Try not to look at in a scary, but a great way. Your becoming a women finally. You will be okay, that's the good thing. But, you will feel different. You should feel like a stronger and healthier women and maybe even more confident. So, I will end this by saying: The only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask.

I didn't get mine until a month before I turned fourteen. They were very far apart at first--seven weeks--but then became more regular. They still aren't though (I'm eighteen now). They change a lot, but currently mine are heavy for two days, moderate for another two, and then very light for another two. The day after that I just wear black underwear and that's fine. I tend to get cramps the day before I get my period and at the very end (I think of it as ringing out my uterus to get the very last of it!). And a word on PMS: I usually have it for a few days before. I am very moody, and little things make me cry. It was funny, the day before my period once, I saw a play of Wizard of Oz with my family. I was emotionally all over the place, and every time Dorothy picked up Toto I burst into tears. Good luck! Feel free to IM me at sidwantsdiego for anything!

How do you know you're close? You may not be. Just because a lot of your friends are getting their's, it does not mean you will. Your'smight be a few years away even. If you want to prevent getting it until you are ready, eat very little and almost not fat. I'd say about 1000 calories at the most a day. Also, be very active, like, 2 hours a day at least of physical activity.

it'll last from 4-7 days.
it'll be havy at first and as the days pass it starts to lessen till it stops.
it happens once a month. suppose it lasts 4rm jan.1-5 then the next month expect it around the same days. some people will fall exactly on the same dates...others will be 1-2 weeks late or early.
depending on u u might have cramps
and don't be scared to tell ur mom..weve all been through it........

no need to worry. just make sure you have pads and know what to do with them. and make sure you have a little calendar or something to mark down which days its on so you'll know for the next month. you'll probably feel a little bloated but that's normal. and if you have cramps dont worry, i use a warm water bottle and drink hot chocolate. just find out what makes you comfortable. no need to be nervous. it's just another part of becoming a woman. enjoy the time you have now when you dont have your period!

Well-you should be asking your mother or your doctor, not going to the Internet. Just remember that strangers on the Internet are not trustworthy. Go talk to your mom...
